How this works
- In the northern hemisphere the sun rises in the east, is highest in the south at midday and sets in the west, and it sits higher in summer than in winter.
- So east walls get gentle morning sun, south walls get the most sun in winter and a steeper, easier angle in summer, and west walls take the hardest, hottest afternoon sun.
- The glass suggestions are general: low solar heat gain where sun heat is the problem, higher gain on south walls in cold climates, and low U-factor everywhere in cold climates. We confirm with ratings for your area.

Three things set the glass.
Which way the wall faces
West walls take the hottest sun and south walls the longest.
Your climate
Hot places block sun heat, and cold places welcome it on the south.
The season
The sun is high in summer and low in winter.
Shade
Trees, awnings and overhangs change the answer.
Sun Dial questions
What glass should I choose?
It depends on your climate and which way each wall faces. Low-E glass helps almost everywhere, triple-pane shines in cold climates and low solar heat gain glass helps hot, sunny walls. Our Sun Dial shows what each wall needs.
Will new windows really lower my energy bills?
They can, especially over old single-pane or leaky windows, but savings depend on your house, climate and habits. Our Glass Lab gives a rough, honest comparison, and we do not promise specific savings.
Can you replace doors too?
Yes. We install entry, patio and sliding, French, storm, interior and custom doors, and we can match hardware and trim.
Want a wall-by-wall plan?
We walk your house and recommend glass for every side.
