How this works
  • Old openings are rarely square, so you measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at the left, center and right, and use the smallest of each.
  • Replacement windows are made a little smaller than the opening so they fit and can be shimmed level. The size allowance depends on the window and the installation method, so treat the order size here as a starting point.
  • The egress note uses the common rule of thumb for basement bedrooms. Local codes differ, so we confirm every measurement and the rules that apply before anything is ordered.
Why it matters

Every window starts with a good measure.

Three places

Openings are rarely square, so one number is never enough.

The smallest wins

Use the smallest width and height so the unit fits.

Allowance

A small allowance lets the unit be shimmed level.

Verify before ordering

Made-to-order windows cannot be returned, so we check.

Good questions

Measure Guide questions

How do I get a price?

Fill in the form on any page, or call or text 800-224-9245. Tell us roughly how many windows or doors you have, what bothers you most and any style you like, and send a photo if you can. We measure and send a written, itemized estimate.

How long does installation take?

Many homes take a day or two for a handful of windows and a few days for a whole house, plus the lead time for made-to-order units. Our Window Counter estimates the days for your house.

What is the difference between full-frame and insert replacement?

An insert slides a new window into the existing frame and keeps your trim. Full-frame removes the frame too, so rot and leaks can be repaired and new flashing and insulation installed.
